Baker: The Sourdough Pursuit

The steam and smell of hot sourdough spread over me as Caroline cracked the loaf open. I began to understand just exactly what she was doing…making whole-grain art for the people. Caroline Garrett is a modest wizard who is passionate about working with the humblest of ingredients; whole-grain flour, salt, water, and air. Her attention to craft, passion for baking, and the love she puts into it, so clearly come through as you take your first bite of her cottage-made loaves of bread. Her business partner Virgil the 6-year-old wild-cultivated sourdough starter is a gentle and kind creation that she tends to like a mother would a child. Together with a Master’s degree in Nutrition, a serious commitment to local healthy food security, and an infectious smile, she quietly toils away to make the most basic of foods come to life-literally. Her life of adventure has taken her across the globe, learning about the importance of good food and our collective heritage. This path has led her to our valley as a professional cook and food advocate. “The Sourdough Pursuit is my answer to sliced bread,” she remarked. “I just love making something real and wholesome for folks instead of what is out there.” Caroline admits to being a better baker than a businesswoman. For the time being, she is content to sell sourdough through her baking coop, custom orders, and the Whitefish Farmers Market. By all means, look her up and give her a call. You will thank yourself…oh yeah, you should spread butter all over it too.
